Fond memories - retro sweets and school days

July 6, 2010 by Joulear

A short article looking at the delights that were once available at the tuck shop and how dedicated suppliers can bring all those happy memories flooding back

Memories play an important part in all of our lives and as most will agree, the memories provided by everyone’s favourite ‘after school’ treats are amongst the finest. It may be the case that it’s thirty years and more since you frequented tuck shops and the local corner shop to invest in a quarter of aniseed balls or chocolate mice, but it’s fair to say that the sights and smells of the occasion remain as vivid as ever. And just when you thought these wonderful childhood experiences were consigned to history, all those old favourites are making a timely re-emergence.

Of course, the chances are that your local corner shop is no more and your much loved tuck shop will have to remain a happy memory, but the products they were famous for are once again available for your enjoyment. Unwrap a ‘Fruit Salad’ or slip a liquorice torpedo into your mouth and amazingly, you’ll find the experience is as enjoyable as it was all those years ago. The packaging is the same and the flavours are identical in every way, the only thing that might be rather different is that modern retailers carry a far wider range of retro sweets than your favourite tuck shop!

We all remember the anticipation that came with holding a quarter of ‘foam shrimps and bananas’ in our grip and make no mistake, levels of anticipation will be similar when you place orders for candy perfection via specialist internet based retailers. In effect it’s like having a virtual tuck shop on hand 24/7 and the beauty of it is, whenever you’re taken by a particular craving, you can slip online and enter a much loved bygone era.

Who remembers queuing at the shop to get their hands on the amazing chewy ‘Wham’ bar and the wonderful ‘tingly’ sensation experienced when you chewed into the little crystals of fizz? Fond memories indeed and whilst it’s impossible to regain our youth, it is perfectly possible to regain some of those long lost experiences provided by our favourite products.

Offering products that bring wonderfully warm memories of childhood and a bygone era is a stroke of genius, after all who could possibly resist the charms of a quarter of absolute perfection? It’s often the case that originals are hard to improve upon and this is certainly the case where our favourite treats are concerned.
